It's this kind of forward-thinking that has made Warzone such a big hit with players, although it's far from the only viable option in the crowded battle royale genre. It retains many of the unique features of its predecessor, such as the Gulag respawn system, while adding an all-new game mode, the DMZ, to take advantage of the trend for looter-extraction games. This has continued into Warzone 2, with the sequel boasting new maps, AI combatants to deal with, and cross-platform play. Some of this is down to the game being free-to-play, like most of the other popular battle royale games. Unlike previous attempts, like the failed Blackout mode in Black Ops 4, however, Warzone actually works. Call of Duty: Warzone wasn't Activision's first attempt to tap into the lucrative battle royale market.
